I started off this year with Andre Agassi’s incredible autobiography. As a fan of tennis, I started the book assuming it was going to be about his life on the tour – hard-fought wins, tough losses etc. Boy, was I surprised! It would not be an exaggeration to say this was one of the best biographical books I have ever read!
There is just so much to unpack in this book – how different relationships evolve over time, how differently success and losses play on one’s emotions (especially during the earlier years), how brutal media and public attention can be, how lonely or isolating individual sports is, how hard it is to find people who can understand what one is going through and support them and so on.
The book contains Agassi’s version of all of his tennis rivalries, memorable matches and behind the scenes look at his tennis career – and these stories by themselves would have made this a good book. But this book is so much more than that, and I am so glad to have read it!
